If you ask Derek Nieves where he’s from, he’ll start rattling off locations: Spain, Maryland, Germany, Brooklyn. He’s a self-proclaimed military brat, and while some might describe such a childhood with a pang of sadness, Nieves grows more excited with each place he mentions, as though he’s rediscovering a favorite pair of jeans that somehow got lost in the back of a dresser drawer.
