COCA Exhibition Submission FAQ

Exhibitions for 2012 have already been finalized. Deadline for submitting proposals for 2013 is June 30, 2012.

What is the Art in Public Places Program?

The Art in Public Places Program of the Council on Culture & Arts curates art exhibitions in two municipal buildings, City Hall and the Tallahassee Regional Airport. The goal of the exhibition spaces is to showcase artists, professional and non-professional, from the Big Bend Area.

The City Hall Gallery is located on the second floor of Tallahassee’s City Hall, 300 South Adams Street. Open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, the gallery space can accommodate 40-60 artworks, depending on size.

The Artport Gallery is located in the Tallahassee Regional Airport, 3300 Capital Circle SW. The gallery is open to the public daily 8:00 am – 11:30 pm. The gallery is a triangular space with two walls, 35’ and 39’.

When does the season start and end?

We accept proposals or applications from individuals and groups for January through December. The exhibitions for 2012 have already been selected.

Who can apply?

Professional and amateur artists, artist groups or individuals who are 18 years old or older and are residents of the Tallahassee/Big Bend Area (within 100 miles of Tallahassee) are eligible. We look at all visual art media (except video and performance art). Artists who have shown in a one or two-person exhibit (this doesn’t include group exhibits) in either the Artport or the City Hall Gallery are asked to wait three years before applying again.

There is no fee or membership requirement to apply for exhibition.

How do I apply for 2103?

Fill out the form on this page no later than June 30, 2012. As of 2011, COCA will only accept applications electronically.

How do I send images?

  • Electronic images should be in .TIF, .JPG, or .PDF format. Number your images with your last name and the number corresponding to the number on the application.
  • Electronic images may be directly uploaded to COCA (this is the preferred method). After you hit the "submit" button on the bottom of your application, you will be automatically taken to a page that lets you upload your images.
  • You may also hand deliver or mail a CD with your images.
  • If electronic images are not an option, you may instead submit photographic prints (no larger than 8x10") of your images (hand deliver or mail to COCA). On the back of each sheet, write the number of the image corresponding to the number on your application and write the word “top” with an arrow pointing to the top of the sheet.
  • Prints and CDs will not ordinarily be returned, except by special request.

What happens after I submit my application?

  • The Arts Advisory Committee will review proposals over the summer and make recommendations to COCA’s Exhibition Director. If your work is selected, the Director will contact you about location and exhibition dates, and both parties will sign a letter of agreement stating the details of the exhibition.
  • Exhibitions are usually six to eight weeks in length
  • COCA posts exhibitions on its website and Facebook page, e-mails exhibition announcements to its e-mail lists, provides publicity information to local news media, provides a listing of the artwork for visitors, hangs the artwork, and prepares labels. Please note that due to City budget cuts, COCA is no longer able to coordinate or staff public reception for non-annual exhibitions.
  • The artist is responsible for delivery and pick up of artwork to the gallery. 2D artwork must be framed and ready to hang, compatible with the Walker hanging system used in the galleries. Artist may need to provide pedestals for display of 3D artwork.
  • City policy prohibits display of artwork containing nudity or religious iconography.
  • COCA is generally unable to hang artwork larger than 5'x5' or exceeding 30 pounds.
  • COCA does not sell artwork on display, but does refer inquiries to the artist. COCA does not take a commission on sales resulting from the exhibition.
  • The City provides insurance coverage for artwork while on display in the galleries.

Are there other exhibition opportunities with COCA?

COCA sponsors two annual juried exhibitions: PhotoFest (fine art photographs) each fall at Artport and Creative Tallahassee (all media) each spring in City Hall Art Gallery. COCA also maintains an Artist Directory on our website here.
