Alert the Media!
A workshop for arts organizations, businesses, artists, and educators
Saturday, February 25, 2012
11 am - 1 pm
at COCA (816 S. ML King Jr. Blvd., Tallahassee)
Social media is the latest thing, but traditional media is still a vital part of any marketing or public relations effort. A panel of media professionals will tell you:
- What is actually newsworthy?
- What catches their attention when someone is pitching a story?
- What is the best way to send information to the news media?
- How far in advance should you send it, and what materials should you send?
- Who makes a good interviewee? What are the things to do and not do in an interview
The panel will include:
- Kati Schardl: Features Editor, Tallahassee Democrat
- Rosanne Dunkelberger: Editor, Tallahassee Magazine
- Tom Flanigan: Community Relations Director for News, WFSU
- Shonda Knight: Executive Producer and Anchor, WCTV
- TBA: Representative of Cumulus Broadcasting Stations
COST: $10 general public, $5 COCA members
Seating is limited, so advance registration is highly recommended (registration available at the door only if space is available). If you need sign language interpretation, or workshop materials in large print, Braille, or electronic format, please call 224-2500 five working days in advance.
About the Panel
Kati Schardl is the Features Editor for the Tallahassee Democrat. She’s a true North Florida native – born in Panama City and raised in Marianna. She came to Tallahassee to attend FSU and earned a social work degree before yielding to the scruffy allure of journalism and joining the staff of the Florida Flambeau. After more than a decade of serving as office manager and chief research assistant/go-fer for the St. Petersburg Times capital bureau, Kati joined the staff of the Democrat as music writer and theater critic. In 2006, she was awarded an NEA Fellowship that enabled her to spend 10 days in Los Angeles seeing plays and attending writing workshops hosted by the USC Annenberg School of Journalism.
Rosanne Dunkelberger has more than 30 years of experience as a reporter and editor in the newspaper and magazine industries, and has also served in several marketing roles/positions. She has been the Editor of Rowland Publishing’s award-winning flagship title, Tallahassee Magazine, since 2005. She has also developed and managed the editorial for other award-winning tourism magazines produced by Rowland Publishing, including Sandestin magazine for Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and Footprints Magazine for the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa.
Shonda Knight joined WCTV in December of 2006 and is now Executive Producer. She also co-anchors Eyewitness News at Noon. Since joining the WCTV Team, Shonda has anchored Daybreak, The Good Morning Show and hosted the In the Spotlight community segment. She now focuses much of her time on overseeing reporters and producers in the newsroom. From 2003 until joining WCTV, she was an anchor at WTXL in Tallahassee. Shonda takes pride in serving the community on many levels and is especially passionate about helping young people. She serves as a board member for the Tallahassee Girls Choir of CHOICE and among her many affiliations, works closely with the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council.
Tom Flanigan is Community Relations Director for News at Tallahassee Public Radio station WFSU-FM. His previous radio news career included stops at stations in Maryland, Texas and Florida. He also spent nearly two-decades in corporate communications for various firms.
